Working With Shapes in Microsoft word Document

What is a shape?

A shape is an object or it is said to be an external boundary, outline or surface, which contains other properties such as color, texture or material composition. Examples are lines, arrows, circle or oval, rectangles, squares and the picture below shows some of the basic shapes in ms word

Microsoft word document contains different shapes which gives the user access on inserting of different shapes to helps the user to achieved some their basic need when it arise. The following are steps on how to insert shapes in Microsoft word document:

  • Start Microsoft word
  • Click on insert menu
  • Click on shape icon
  • Select any shape of your choice
  • Click and drag or click on the document environment to insert the shape

Selecting a shape

  • For a single selection, just point and click the shape using the left button of the mouse. The picture below defines single selection.

  • For multiple selections, select the first shape hold down your Ctrl key on the computer keyboard and start clicking the next shapes. This picture below explains multiple selection.

Formatting shape in Microsoft word

Formatting a shape simply mean beautifying the shapes to suit your choice (that is, adding color, resizing the shape, increasing the line weight etc). This feature gives the shapes more definition as well as makes the shapes looks more beautiful to the eye. This formatting process includes:

Adding color to a shape

Adding color to a shape in Microsoft word document using the shape fill icon includes adding, solid color, Picture, Gradient, Texture and Pattern. This effect can only work on the selected shapes (that is, the shape(s) need to be select be apply any of those features below:

To add Solid color

Select the shape after inserting (note, eight node will surround the shape with a green circle node which is use for rotation. This picture below defines the selection of shape.

  • Insert the shape (e.g square, rectangle)

  • Click on format menu
  • Click on shape fill icon arrow
  • Point and click any color of your chioce

To add picture Fill

  • First, Insert a shape
  • Select the shape
  • Click on format menu
  • Click on shape fill icon arrow
  • Point and click picture
  • Select any picture of your choice from the computer file
  • Click Open

To add gradient fill

  • Start ms word and Insert a shape
  • Select the shape
  • Click on format menu
  • Click on shape fill icon arrow
  • Point  to Gradient
  • Following the arrow, select and click any gradient of your choice
  • Click on More Gradients for more options

To add texture fill

  • Insert a shape
  • Select the shape
  • Click on format menu
  • Click on shape fill icon arrow
  • Point to Texture
  • Following the arrow, select and click any texture of your choice

To add pattern fill

  • After Inserting a shape
  • Select the shape
  • Click on format menu
  • Click on shape fill  icon arrow
  • Point and click pattern
  • Select any pattern of your choice
  • Do the necessary setting like Foreground and Background color
  • Click on OK

Note: To remove all formatting added in the shape such as solid color, gradient, picture, patter and texture fill, the following steps must be noted:

  • Select the shape
  • Click on format menu
  • Click on shape fill icon arrow
  • Click on No Fill
