A folder is a container that is use to store files in the computer system, it can also be called a directory, is a special type of file on the computer’s file system which contains other files and folders (that is sub-folder).

When talking about folder in a graphical user interfaces such as Windows and the Macintosh environment, a folder is an object that can contain multiple documents, file and sub-folders which are used to organize information in the computer for easy assessing while in the DOS and UNIX worlds, folders are called directories, function the same way as windows and Macintosh. A folder helps to keep the files in the computer organized. If you had no folders on your computer, your documents, programs, and operating system files would all be located in the same place. Folders also allow user to have more than one file with the same file name. For instance, you can have a file called Resume.doc in your My Documents folder, and another file called Resume.doc in a different folder called Resume templates. If all your files were in a single place, every file would need a unique file name. the following are need for creating a folder:

  • Right click an empty space in your desktop window environment (main screen).
  • Select New following the arrow click folder
  • Note, the new folder will come with a default name “New Folder”
  • Type in the name you wish to save the folder with and press the enter key from the keyboard or click the folder icon (picture).

This process involves making a duplicate of the original folder, here the original will be in the computer and the copy of the original will created. The following are the steps:

  • Point and right click the folder
  • Select and click copy
  • Move to a different location on the desktop environment or into another folder, right click and paste.

For keyboard shortcut point and click the folder picture (icon), press Ctrl + C on your keyboard. To paste, press Ctrl + V.

How to cut a Folder

This involves removing the folder from its main location to a different location. The following are the steps:

  • Point and right click the folder
  • Select and click cut
  • Move to a different location on the desktop environment or into another folder, right click and paste

For keyboard shortcut point and click the folder picture (icon), press Ctrl + X on your keyboard. To paste, press Ctrl + V.
