Desktop background, theme and screen saver in today’s computer have been as thing of joy as it helps to beautify the desktop environment of the computer system.

Desktop background

The computer desktop background (wallpaper) is the image, picture or even graphic that is found at the front of the computer desktop environment to be more precisely it is the first picture that appears at the computer window after finishing booting process. The following steps can be use to set the computer desktop background:

  • Click on the start button/menu
  • Select and click Control Panel
  • Select and click Appearance and Personalization or Appearance and Theme as the case may be.
  • Select and click change desktop background
  • Select any background of your choice (picture)
  • To use your own picture click on browse
  • Select the picture location
  • Click on Apply and Ok

Alternative method for computer desktop background

  • Right click an empty space on desktop environment
  • Select and Personalize
  • Click the desktop background icon
  • Click on browse to use you own picture
  • Click the Save Changes button

This alternative method can also be use for setting the computer theme and screen saver also

Themes

A theme is a combination of pictures, sounds and colors on your computer. This includes desktop background, screen saver, window border color and sound.

Note, some theme when install on the computer system, changes might also include desktop icon and mouse pointers. The following steps can be use to set the computer theme:

  • Click start/menu button
  • Click control panel
  • Click Appearance and Personalization or Appearance and theme
  • Click change the theme
  • Select and click any theme of your choice

Screen Saver

This is a picture or writings that appear in front of your computer or cell phone when the screen is in idle mode. It can be say to be a software program that becomes activated after the computer system has been inactive for a specified amount of time.

Screensavers were originally designed to help prevent images or text from being burned into older monitors.  In the past, screen saver programs like After Dark would install on your computer and run by itself but today, most screen savers and screen saver packages install into an operating system which runs the screen saver. The following steps can be use to set the computer screen saver:

  • Click on the start button/menu
  • Select and click Control Panel
  • Select and click Appearance and Personalization or Appearance and Theme as the case may be.
  • Select and click change Screen Saver
  • From the above screenshot, click 1 to make selection.
  • Click on preview to see the effect
  • Click on Apply and Ok

Many new computer users are confused about desktop (wallpaper) and a screen saver, desktop background is the picture that constantly show on the computer system whenever it finish booting, which is the picture shown on your desktop environment while screen saver is picture that appears later when the computer is not in use.

Can I use screen savers save power on my computer?

The answer is capital “No”, when a screen saver is visible, it means your computer and monitor are both on, and that means you’re using the same amount of power as if the computer is still on since its showing a screen saver. The following are tips for power saving:

  • One of the best ways of prolonging the life of your computer is by turning “ON” power saving mode or reducing the light of your monitor.
  • You will also save power and extend the life of your monitor if you turn it off when you step away from your computer instead of using a screen saver.
  • If you want a screen saver to show your pictures or for other aesthetic reasons, you can also change your power savings mode to turn off your monitor after being away for an hour or more.
